Design and Manufacture Options
When it comes to designing and manufacturing a graphic overlay there are many different options that need to be considered, including:
Substrate - Polyester (PET) is the most common substrate in use because it is cost-effective, flexible and durable. Different thicknesses and surface textures are available and hard coats can be applied for harsh environments.
Adhesive - It is important that a suitable mounting adhesive is selected to match the mounting surface and the expected environmental conditions. We stock a wide range of industry-leading 3M mounting adhesives to suit every application.
Cutting - Graphic overlays can be either laser cut or die cut. Laser cutting is typically used for prototypes and lower volume production. Speak to our customer service team to work out which option is right for you.
Window Type - We can provide you with a variety of different window options, including scratch resistant, deadfront, anti-glare and anti-newton ring.
What are Graphic Overlays?
Graphic Overlays are normally associated with the top layer of membrane switches, however they can be be used on any product that requires:

A decorative overlay that improves the visual impact of the product, including the addition of logos and product-specific branding, or

A functional overlay that guides users on how to interact with the product and where to press/touch to active the functional elements beneath the overlay (such as switches, buttons, etc).

Instrument Dials and Gauges
Instrument dials and gauges are specific types of graphic overlays that are used by the automotive and marine industries. Although the techniques used to make these products are the same screen printing techniques used for regular graphic overlays, special care and attention needs to be placed on registration and tolerances in order meet the exacting standards required by the automotive industry. Products for the automotive industry normally undergo extensive environmental condition testing.
